That's got to suck : On the Eve of the start of the Euromaidan movement, a calculated targeting of the power lines feeding Crimea . Ukraine's Army and security services now have to assist in the repair and guarding of the power lines that feed the occupying Russian forces and residents of this land of Limbo. I still have a few friends there, I don't want them getting trapped in the elevator, regardless if they are Pro Russian or anti- occupation.
The blockade, I don't know what it is achieving, results , aggravation, or both. Of course, the power lines feed the Kherson region too, they have to be fixed, but it's a decision point for the leadership, one more small decision that affects long term outcomes. For sure, the blockade will be another bargaining chip in the dialogue about when, if ever Ukraine will get control back of it's border with Russia in the conflict zones in the East.
It's impossible to visualize what a moveable security barrier would like like for Ukraine, the EU : if Russia pushes harder against the line, wants to spend more money, risk bankrupting itself, or the EU wants more security, more sense of things "under control" This play off between EU values and concerns, versus the USA's position, it's endlessly being exploited for gain.
I can hardly question the feelings of the people of Ukraine when they say "Can we have our Lichens back ? You occupied our Lichen population. " One of these lichen species could hold the key to a cure for cancer, and what is that worth today, tomorrow, next year, next decade ? Science will carry on, try to navigate this geopolitics stuff in it's altruistic manner, but how does this shake out in the golden ticket lottery of the Nasdaq exchange ?
There was, is, so much in Crimea, Russia annexed Ukraine's biodiversity, and we can't put a price on a Nation's Biodiversity , can we ?
Beyond the seizure of banks, cars, real estate, hard assets like Ports, Roads , Petroleum storage facilities, they stole history, Crimea was held by the Greeks, Phoenicians, Tatars, it's seen many changes in government, over time, but their were numerous guarantees, given by Russia and the International community, over many decades, within the Post World War 2 order, establishing Ukraine's territory. It's umbilical cord , power, roads, water, come from the heart of Ukraine.
And at this point, beyond destructive bombing campaigns, what "help" can Russia really offer in Syria? why is it even postulated as a bargaining chip for Ukraine ? Syria is utterly destroyed, order may never return. Is the bombing in Syria, just a pointed example of what Russia can do to Ukraine, if they feel like it ?
Do the botanical Departments of Major Universities have to be careful not to make Russia very angry , if they continue listing a set of lichen populations within Ukraine's territorial index ? Has the Academic War only just begun ?

While the press appears to often feature some impending process in Ukraine of a "descent into further anarchy" well buoyed by the Russian press services, aren't we forgetting that these are normal people who enjoy nature, the positive ecology and so forth. The Soviet planners who consolidated people into large cities were in many ways progressive to leave the countryside open for nature and agriculture. True, the architecture, apartments are cheaply built, badly maintained, and often just rather unhappy affairs, they are energy efficient and affordable.
At the end of the day, it feels like a battle of technology and ideology , what meek people will inherit the Earth, and why ? Is victory meant for the bold and the visionary instead ? Will Tesla Motors succeed in usurping and reinventing the Petro -dollar ? Or is it another short term gimmick to make money ?
