All down the line

Well you can't say yes and you can't say No !'

There is no doubt of Political and Environmental climate change in Ukraine : they are trying to lead the resolution of their conflict with the neighbor, rather than be driven by events, utilizing nuance and the typical off handed neutrality, not giving credit where it isn't due.

Ukraine continues to hold an edge, a sweet spot for foreign investment. The conflict areas will have to wait for a game plan from Moscow to take shape for their economy to return to anything close to it's pre-war levels. It's mostly older retired people there now, and mercenary style gangsters. For sure, it will be an endless game with Moscow and Kyiv, the blame shifting, it's a natural human and societal trait. Very few governments and societies can openly talk about their mistakes and accept blame, move on. Maybe the Scandinavian countries can. Germany certainly taught it in the schools.

There was a working automotive electronic wiring operation in the now Eastern Ukraine ATO zone (Anti-terror Operation) that was stripped of its equipment, the terrorists attempted to ransom the gear that was stolen, a conflict management specialist reviewed what they were trying to ransom and determined that what was stripped from the factory had been rendered useless. Millions of $'s in plant facility, equipment , 100's  of jobs : gone. Russia needs to come up with better answers why they created this wasteland in Ukraine. Too many people got killed over essentially nothing, the 2 sides have similar world views, complimentary economic interests, a shared history.  It's more a conflict about past history than a war about a better future for both sides.

Now it's not just shutting off gas deliveries to Ukraine, it's the loss of industrial output, like any war time scenario, basic resources are getting scarcer. Rather than taking virgin materials from the steel producing core of their economy, major industries are depending on scrap metal deliveries, as I hear it. Now there is a coal blockade, Ukraine never anticipated they'd be cut off from their coal producing region in the Donbas .

Yet these large British, Russian , Chinese , Arabian, Persian , African Empires all are caught in the global tug of war for resources and economic position. Local populations get caught in the middle of these huge Geopolitical struggles, some people win, some people Lose, it's the name of the game.

Last night, a relatively warm Southern wind blew here in the center of Ukraine, Dnepropetrovsk , the vibe : it's pretty chill, one wouldn't think a block post  2/300 Kilometers distant might be coming under fire, from another cease fire violation. Heavily supplied with advanced Russian Weaponry in semi-Permanent engineered combat bases . What defenses does Ukraine really have,  once a sizable  armored force gets past their line of containment ? A breakout event could just be a diversion,  Let's hope it doesn't get to that, as it will lead to anarchy, could quickly become a much larger humanitarian crisis. It now seems nearly impossible that Minsk II agreement will come into effect.

The African students seem pretty comfortable, happy to be here, well dressed, proper behavior, keeping to themselves, they prefer the threat of Russian Invasion to Boko Haram. They don't seem to be worried about Racist, Xenophobic attacks, that is all hyperbole in the foreign media. Who knows ? Wealthy African clans may start to invest in Ukraine, at least they understand how emerging economies can work in tandem. It is all about competing spheres of influence.

As the Republicans and Democrats try to hone their arguments about who should be the boss talker in the White House, and frame a perception of President Obama's foreign Policy leadership, Russia continues to win the viewpoint in many minds that it's Mister Putin, Now, More than Ever .... but like President Nixon, will there be a Watergate Tapes ? will his own ego be his downfall ? His own sense of invincibility ? As France grapples with, tries to emerge from it's own 9-11, and struggle to redefine it's historically significant role in World Leadership, as a benefactor of the fledgling American post Colonial  Democracy in it's long struggle against British domination, so too, is Ukraine emerging from far too long a period of Russian domination. As China emerged from British domination and influence, a Historically great Empire , like the Maya, Aztec, Peruvian Empires of the New World . In the scheme of things, our lives are short, we start here and end there, and maybe start over again.

As both Ukraine and Alaska are present day artifacts of the former Russian Empire, their issues as a base of resource extraction are not indifferent.  For Russia , in their heart of hearts will always feel  that Ukraine is Russia , and Ukraine Nationalists will always feel that Russia was the upstart that occupied them and created grief and horrid burden. Like a battle between Yin and Yang, it will never cease, only the combatants will change. I was listening to Yusef Lateeef''s "the Dreamer" LP the other night, I never appreciated how he scored it in opposing sections within the composition between warm, bright and cool , chromatic. Maybe an allegory of a Jazz composer's work from the 60's is inappropriate, but that's how I see it at this time. It's in a chromatic phase.

the Native Alaskans are not big fans of the Russian occupation, some of the stories are lurid and not worth detailing. Trading furs, those cutesy little Sea Otters, such sublime fur, don't know how many Sea Otter coats even survive to this day. I know these otter populations, having been to Afognak Island Alska in the early 80's , alone, by Kayak http://alaska.guide/Bay/1404023/Izhut-Bay
the fishing and fur industry was/ has been a mainstay.... The families are all mixes of Native, Scandinavian, Russian , Irish, and what have you, it's a melting pot.

Now China is buying Alaskan Native People's resources, trying to.
Like Ukraine, they need to feed their manufacturing base.
Nothing is set in stone yet, but it's looking like a nearly done deal :

Not just a community, but Racial and spiritual survival, without a grounding of a healthy natural environment, their (Native People's ) connection with God and tradition is gone. As I experienced it, the Native religion is intermixed with the Russian Orthodox Church ,
Of course lawlessness , Alaskan Motorcycle gangs smuggled drugs in trade for animal parts, walrus tusks and the like. Alaska continues to be a very high per capita epicenter of violent crime and murder, and such development as coal mining only threatens to make it a lot worse (( The USA has never done a stellar job of containing the crime and degradation relating to the economic exploitation of Alaska. As to the question if it was still an outpost of the Russian Federation, I can only speculate .... The Russian Federation would be a different place, Canada would be different, everything would be different. alternatively , Alaska could have become an Independent Republic, like Texas and simply stayed that way...leaving it open to being annexed by Russia, how would the lower 48 states feel about that ? Alaska is America's energy bread basket, we are lucky to have it!

] All Down the Line, by the Rolling Stones:

Yeah, heard the diesel drumming all down the line.
Oh, heard the wires a humming all down the line.
Yeah, hear the women sighing all down the line.
Oh, hear the children crying all down the line.
(All down the line)
We'll be watching out for trouble, yeah.
(All down the line)
And we'd better keep the motor running, yeah.
(All down the line)
Well, you can't say yes and you can't say no,
Just be right there when the whistle blows.
I need a sanctified girl with a sanctified mind to help me now.

Yeah, all the people singing all down the line.
Mmmm, watch the men all working, working, yeah.
(All down the line)

(All down the line)
We're gonna open up the throttle yeah.
(All down the line)
We're gonna bust another bottle, yeah.
(All down the line)

I need a shot of salvation, baby, once in a while.
Hear the whistle blowing, hear it for a thousand miles.

(All down the line)
We're gonna open up the throttle, yeah.
All down the line, we're gonna bust another bottle, yeah.
Well you can't say yes, and you can't say no,
Just be right there when the whistle blows.
I need a sanctified mind to help me out right now.

Be my little baby for a while.
Won't you be my little baby for a while?
