3 Ukraines ?

The good, the Bad and the Beautiful ?
The Rich, the young, and the Poor ?
The banal, the serious and the sensual ?
the workers, the slackers and the artists ?

the mood in the metro last night, there was a funny moment: a big guy was sitting next to a skinny guy, at the seats on the end suited for 3 people. and then this really big guy sat down, the guy in the end was really squeezed, but they were all friends and another guy who was a friend, he started to laugh and joke about it, the normal (not big guy got up and then tried to sit in the middle between the two big guys , they were all laughing and jolly : despite this strange news of Right sector Cigarette wars (which seems to be strangely simplified and  compressed in Western media) Life goes on.

but the last time I checked, if it is a conflict  about cigarettes, shouldn't we blame it on the tobacco  that originated with the American Indians ? There has to be that "ah Hah!" moment where the true culprit is revealed .... Does the Iroquois Nation have their own secret agents operating off of the reservation in Ukraine ?

of course, my city has it's own scandal swirling around San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi
he was caught beating (hitting) his own wife, nearly lost his job over it, now this :

Now in Ukraine, it might be thought of as a potential false flag operation designed to promote right wing, anti-immigrant viewpoints. Honestly, I don't think the shooting was an accident, but that is for a jury to decide. the guy has been in jail a long time, learned how to stick with his story, use the system, and has a good public defender.

I don't know about the things I don't know about directly: all I can say is it's nice to be here, although there is still a good bit of strange stuff going on all the time.

I ran into Mayor Klitchko last night, resolutely, I was going to get a late night bite of dinner (I was pretty hungry and going to where I knew there was solid food : I said "hello " to him without altering pace. It felt kind of natural, like saying hi to your waiter you recognize from the cafe, or the lady at the Metro entrance who works watching the turnstyles. Despite all the turmoil, Ukraine is still a place you can be yourself. I have met him before, no reason to pester him with some oddball question about  how to manage this huge city, or do something strategic like inviting the Rolling Stones here to make a huge free concert . They could hole them up in Mezhernya for a weekend and let them trash the place (I am just kidding, of course)
As much as he (Klitchko ) maybe likes the idea, I knew last night was not the time  to bother  him about  it. Mick and his/Rolling Stones management will do it if it makes sense for them and they want to do it. I just hope the management changes in the State Aviation Ministry won't have some problem with the flight authorization certificates when they approach for a landing

I notice the new Kiev City Administration building getting built in Livoberezhna , they seem to be doing a very forthright, proper job of it, it feels well run from what I can see. But the management of the job ends completely outside the metal security fencing, a lot of litter on the sidewalk outside the job, really it seems that a contract for such a huge project, there would be a line item to maintain cleanliness on the sidewalk ? It would not take 2 hours to scrape the weeds, clean the ground outside the fence, they could leave a trash can outside the job site, and send a worker out the gate for 30 minutes every day to pick up any new stuff. The properties on either side of the site have  people who keep them clean. For me, it is bothersome, as I go running past it to the park by the river.
Having all this trash only encourages this bad habit of litter. In America, San Francisco where I come from, it is the responsibility of the site manager, even if she or he has to do it twice a day (on smaller/ medium jobs) Vodka bottles piled up outside the guard shack, wherever they came from, just don't project a good image socially or environmentally.

in SF, there's a zero tolerance for litter at construction sites. It really doesn't ever seem to take any time, once a policy is enforced/ it's nearly a zero cost part of the budget.
and really, even from the stand point of function, it makes no sense to have huge trucks grinding over these chunks of asphalt that were remnanted in the drive in, eventually there were just these 8 guage wires sticking out of the chunks that would flatten a tire easily, let alone the inconvenience of people having to walk through the dirt and navigate around the pieces that were there for weeks

it is possible to send a e-wriiten request to solve the problem to contact center https://kievcity.gov.ua/
and, particularly http://1551.gov.ua/
There, your request is registered, it is given a number, and you can control at which stage of implementation it is. I actually thought it would be better to approach the site manager directly to talk about it, but couldn't find any friend who'd have the time to help me explain anything, as it is better to let them save face than report it through a site. All this will get cleared, scraped away and redone soon enough, a bit of trash won't stand out in the collective mind.

One guy with a wheel barrow and a shovel could clear this stuff and throw down some pea gravel to make it more easy for pedestrians and trucks to get across, in and out.
These are all contractual and management issues, and one thing I have heard from people is that Mayor Klitchko does want to understand the issues, get engaged in the process of making things better. At the least, he has his money and the self pride not to tolerate corruption as much as possible. He reminds me of my Uncle's ex boss, Mayor Tom Bradley, also an athlete, tall man, gregarious, inquisitive and a good listener. Los Angeles was a corrupt City before Bradley, and like any giant Metropolis there will always be some corruption, scandal, misdeeds.

  1. well the mood in the Metro this evening, tonight, introspective, for sure: everyone lost in their digital devices. No one was Jolly. I got caught in the early evening trying to sneak a little paper cup of espresso onto the escalator at Arsenalynya, that Turnstyle watcher there, she has a sharp eye, she let me drink my shot of coffee before going down the escalator without a problem. THe turnstyle watcher at Universityet is really a sweet lady, a very kind soul. I said good night to her and respect.
